The National Honor Society was officially established in 1921 by the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
Equipped with a constitution, an emblem and motto, and a group of dedicated principals as coordinators, the new NHS organization quickly developed into one of the country’s leading educational groups.
Four main purposes have guided chapters of NHS from the beginning: “To create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools.”
These purposes also translate into the criteria used for membership selection in each local chapter.

Membership Selection Criteria
The National Honor Society is an organization whose membership is formed by students excelling in scholarship, service, leadership and character. Membership is open to students in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades who have been enrolled at the Cochabamba Cooperative School for at least one semester. Membership in the National Honor Society is an honor and a responsibility. In order for a student to be placed on the NHS Candidate List they must have achieved the following:
- An overall GPA of 3.4 (90 percentile) on a 4.0 scale with no “C” grades in the semester columns for the previous school year, with the exception of students’ enrolled in Advanced Placement courses.
- Ten hours of NHS sponsored (or a locally recognized organization) Community Service hours on record with the chapter adviser.
The Chapter Adviser compiles a list of candidates based on the aforementioned selection criteria. Then the NHS Faculty Council members meet to discuss the character and leadership qualities of each candidate on the list. Any disciplinary action(s) on record with the office for a listed candidate will also be discussed.
A majority vote of the Faculty Council will select a candidate for induction. Candidates that are not chosen at that time will meet with the Chapter Adviser to discuss recommendations made by the Faculty Council to improve their chances for selection in the future, or in the case of candidates that are seniors, positive comments/observations made by the Faculty Council and what factors ultimately contributed to non-selection in their particular case.
